Inspire – High potential and gifted education
Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.
At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.
Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?
Recognising potential and developing talent
Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.
Tailored lessons
Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.
Rich opportunities and activities
Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.
Opening doors to wider experiences
Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.
What is high potential and gifted education?
Inspire – High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
At Wyalong Public School, Inspire – High potential and gifted education is embedded in everyday classroom practice. We are committed to recognising and nurturing high potential and gifted students, ensuring every child is supported and challenged to achieve their best. Through differentiated teaching and targeted opportunities, all students are given the opportunity to thrive.
Small Group Learning
At Wyalong Public School, we are committed to meeting the needs of every child. One of the most effective ways we achieve this is through small group instruction.
During literacy and numeracy sessions, there are at least two adults in each classroom to support focused, small group learning. Smaller group sizes allow for personalised teaching, increased student engagement and timely feedback, enabling students to progress at their own pace.
Cross-Curricular Units
We use English-based cross-curricular units to create engaging, meaningful and connected learning experiences. This approach integrates multiple learning areas, helping students see clear connections across subjects and develop a deeper understanding of key concepts.
For example, in our Arts Across Time unit, students explored how dance, music and art in Australian culture have evolved. Students read informational texts, participated in dance performances and wrote about different art movements, developing their understanding through rich, integrated learning experiences.
2026 Cross-Curricular Units
- Term 1: Living Things (Science)
- Term 2: Earth’s Surfaces (Science)
- Term 3: Citizens (Geography)
- Term 4: Visual Literacy through History (Creative Arts and History)
Supportive Classroom Environments
Our classrooms foster a strong sense of belonging and encourage students to take risks, think creatively and collaborate with others. Positive relationships and clear expectations support student wellbeing and engagement.
Formative Assessment
Teachers use ongoing formative assessment to monitor student growth and adapt teaching and learning programs. This ensures learning is responsive and targeted, allowing all students to be supported and extended according to their individual needs.
Higher Projected Gifted Education (HPGE) at Wyalong Public School
At Wyalong Public School, we recognise the importance of nurturing the unique talents and abilities of our Higher Projected Gifted Education (HPGE) students. Our HPGE program offers a diverse range of opportunities designed to challenge and inspire students, helping them to develop not only academic excellence but also critical life skills such as confidence, creativity, leadership, and resilience. Through participation in a wide variety of enriching activities—ranging from debating and public speaking to performing arts, sports, cultural programs, and STEM—students are encouraged to explore their passions and reach their full potential in a supportive and stimulating environment.
Kitchen Garden Program
All students participate weekly in our Kitchen Garden program, which develops lifelong skills, promotes sustainable practices and strengthens community connections. Students grow, harvest and prepare fresh produce from our school vegetable patches, learning the value of teamwork, responsibility and sharing.
Our program has led to outstanding success at the West Wyalong Show, where Wyalong students have been recognised as Most Successful Exhibitor and Champion Exhibitor. Students enter a range of preserves, including jams, relishes and mayonnaise, as well as garden exhibits such as vegetables, fruit and eggs. These achievements reflect the pride students take in contributing to community events and representing their school with confidence.
Wyalong Public School also runs a student-led café, Toppy Fresh, every Wednesday, where students prepare and sell snacks to the school community. This initiative strengthens relationships across the school, as older students mentor younger peers, and fosters a strong sense of belonging and community spirit.
Dance Troupe
Our Dance Troupe engages students in acrobatics, strength, flexibility, and rhythm, culminating in lively community performances at events such as the Lions Concert and Hearts of Gold. Participation builds students’ confidence and connection to the local community.
Debating
Debating at Wyalong Public School provides students with a platform to develop confidence, critical thinking, and effective communication. Through learning to articulate ideas clearly, listen respectfully, and analyse complex issues, students build essential skills for life beyond school. Our dedication to debating excellence is reflected in our achievements as Western Zone Debating Champions in 2023 and 2025.
Sporting Opportunities
We are proud to offer PSSA sporting opportunities in netball, basketball, tennis, and touch football. Our girls’ basketball team became Western Region Champions in 2024, and our teams consistently perform well in regional competitions. Coaching and support from teachers help students develop teamwork, resilience, and leadership.
Indigenous Mentoring Program
In partnership with West Wyalong Public School, our Indigenous Mentoring Program deepens cultural learning and connection to Country through engaging activities like weaving, cultural dance, didgeridoo playing, kinship education, and identity exploration. Students also play a role in sharing cultural knowledge with younger peers.
Wiradjuri Language and Culture
All students learn Wiradjuri language and culture with Sam, experiencing authentic lessons that build understanding and respect for Aboriginal history and perspectives within our community.
Choir
The school choir enriches our community through regular performances at local events. In 2026, students will have the opportunity to audition for the prestigious School Spectacular, enhancing their stage experience and confidence.
Public Speaking
Regular public speaking opportunities help students refine their confidence and communication skills. Every two years, students participate in a Poetry Recitation Day, practising clarity, confidence, and expressiveness before an audience. Additionally, our Public Speaking Team competes with local small schools, fostering resilience and self-belief in a supportive competitive setting.
Performing Arts
Every two years, Wyalong Public School hosts a whole-school concert focused on drama and dance, with every student performing in at least two acts. This ensures all students have the chance to collaborate, develop performance skills, and showcase their creativity.
Small Schools Art Camp
Students in Years 5 and 6 participate in a three-day Small Schools Art Camp, collaborating with peers from neighbouring schools. Guided by expert teachers, they engage in filmmaking, drama, visual arts, and dance, culminating in a performance and exhibition for families.
STEM Opportunities
Students explore STEM pathways through Lego robotics, coding, and 3D printing. STEM lessons extend beyond the curriculum, promoting creativity, problem-solving, and a passion for innovation from an early age.
Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide programs that aim to extend and enrich student potential.
- Wyalong Public School continues to prioritise sporting participation in a multitude of competitions including gala days, knock out competitions and selection through to zone, regional and state carnivals.
